New R4 SDHC V210T Card Increases Memory Capacity and Game Compatibility

The R4 SDHC card was originally released in the middle of 2008 in response to demand for a higher memory capacity from R4 users on the Nintendo DS console. The original R4 DS card could only accept up to 2 gigabytes of Micro-SD TransFlash memory, and as a result did not have the capacity to store more than approximately ten games at any one time.

Members of the original R4 team worked on the R4 SDHC card, which mimicked the R4 card aesthetically but crucially had a memory capacity that was expanded to a huge thirty two gigabytes. This opened the door for realistically using the Nintendo DS and DS Lite consoles, for example, to be used as video players for full-length movies and other large video format files.

Speed Lite

Later on in 2009, however, Nintendo released the DSi console which then effectively rendered the R4 card obsolete as it could not run on the newer console. Sales didn't stop, however, and many people took advantage of the cheaper prices to buy a DS Lite. For this reason, the R4 SDHC unexpectedly surged in popularity and was once again one of the frontrunning DS cards being sold even though the Nintendo DSi had already hit shop shelves.

While other cards have fallen by the wayside in favour of their DSi-compatible counterparts since, the R4 SDHC team have opted this year to reboot the card and give it a fresh look. The card is now called the R4 SDHC v2.10T, and instead of being in its traditional black box it has moved to a golden box with red writing. This is a significant development because cards that are not compatible with the DSi have been ignored since its introduction.

The new card continues to boast a whooping 32GB maximum size of Micro-SD card that can be supported on the card, while a completely rewritten firmware and chipset speeds up the loading time a fraction but also ensures compatibility for many of the newest games. This is critical because many DS and DS Lite cards were neglected after the release of newer consoles, so this update gives a much needed boost for the DS and DS Lite card industry, and also cements the R4 SDHC v2.10T as the forerunner and preferred product among cards for older consoles.
